Synopsis
In “No Exit”, a suspense thriller film released in 2022 and directed by Damien Power, the story is based on the 2017 novel by Taylor Adams. The movie features an emerging actress and a recovering drug addict, Darby Thorne, who, during a snowstorm, becomes trapped in a mountain rest stop with a kidnapper hiding among a small group of strangers.
Part of Darby’s story takes place in a rehab facility, where we see a young woman in treatment confronting the aftermath of her addiction. Unlike many other patients, Darby receives a phone call from the hospital which informs her that her mother is critically injured in an accident. This information allows her to justify the risk of driving to Salt Lake City to say goodbye. The trouble is, a powerful snowstorm forces her to rest at a secluded area with a couple strangers and much to her anxiety, no cell phone signal.
Inside the visitor center where Darby is waiting, we hear the voices of her “companions” – a mid-aged married couple, Ed and Sandi, Lars, and Ash. The calm and charismatic character is a bit socially awkward with a tendency to strange behavior. While most group members seem to share the ordinary traits and were interacting, Darby later finds a young girl trapped inside a van. With no cell phone service, no assistance in sight, and a child’s life in the balance, Darby must figure out which bystander is the kidnapper. As the clock ticks, paranoia heightens, and the film becomes a deadly test of survival and logic. Darby quickly discovers the answer isn’t as simple as it appears. She realizes several people are hiding secrets, and the true antagonist is not who she first thought.
Through a combination of twists and betrayal, the story builds to a climax featuring violent outbursts and desperate deeds. The fight for the child in danger becomes a battle to save not only the child, but a test of darby’s moral principles, cunning, and fortitude as she faces withdrawal symptoms and her inner demons.
In the end, the film portrays darby not only as a survivor but also as a person who faces her trauma and limitations and chooses to recover through acts of kindness and bravery.

Themes & Tone
Addiction and Redemption
As such, No Exit is more than just a survival thriller; it is an intimate journey of redemption. Darby’s story begins with an addiction, a deeply flawed relationship, and an emotionally turbulent existence. Her attempt to rescue another person is, in reality, a far more selfish endeavor — an attempt to assuage the guilt of not being able to do anything good despite her many good actions. This moral conflict adds depth to the character and distinguishes the film from the rest of the genre.
Trust and Deception
The film is a masterpiece of misdirection. It features many characters, all of whom at some point exhibit either guilt or innocence, and the conflict stems from Darby’s inability to trust anyone, including herself. Subtle hints, behavioral patterns, and sudden changes in relationships between characters are mechanisms that play out trust issues to keep the viewer on the edge of their seat.
Isolation and Survival
The snowstorm and remote location represent more than just the setting — they symbolize Darby’s inner turmoil. Facing the world’s isolation and inevitable danger forces her to depend solely on her instincts and determination. The film uses this confining setting to build suspense and reinforce the themes of entrapment.
Moral Complexity
The “bad guys” are, at the very least, concealed in layered reasoning, and a clear-cut villain only surfaces in the final act. Further, Darby’s character as a protagonist is deeply flawed, and her fellow characters are not presented as over-the-top evil. This moral ambiguity is what makes the film’s moral dilemmas poignant, as the audience can grapple with — although not approve of — the reasons behind some actions.
Tone and Cinematic Style
No Exit keeps a steady build of tension and suspense throughout. The use of cinematography, particularly close-ups, minimal lighting, and tight framing work to create a sense of paranoia and claustrophobia. The sound design is essential in this aspect, too. In still moments, every small sound like a creak, breath, and, even, a whisper builds suspense.
The pacing remains brisk after the quick discovery of the kidnapped girl, yet the film does not resort to cheap thrills. The violence present is both quick and brutal. Emotionally charged moments of the film are given the proper time to resonate. As with the rest of the film, the tone is still grounded in realism, and favors psychological tension over grueling violence or over-the-top spectacles.
Critical Reception
Upon its release, No Exit received moderately positive reviews. Audiences and critics praised the film’s tight storytelling, pacing, and plot twists, as well as the performances, especially from Havana Rose Liu, who was commended for headlining the film as a relatively new face to leading roles.
The overall reception of this adaptation was positive, as it was praised for staying true to the heart of the novel and for its streamlined plot, considering the film’s shorter length. Many critics appreciated the film’s new take on the “strangers in a confined space” trope, a familiar thread in literature and film. Some even compared it to classic thrillers such as The Hateful Eight or Identity, highlighting its deeper emotional layers.
Some critics raised concerns over the film’s lack of development for supporting characters, noting a dependence on certain genre norms. Regardless, the film was deemed a well-crafted, captivating thriller, commended for its tight structure, steady tension, and emotional resolution.
Conclusion

This film captures genre thrills and personal drama through high-stakes intrigue and morally layered characters.
