Pandora 2016

“Pandora” is a South Korean film which was distributed in 2016. It was directed by Park Jung-woo. The film, which is a drama, revolves around a fictional nuclear disaster. However, it is not a mere disaster film. It tells a powerful story of family, loss, and sacrifice, and what it means to bear the weight of responsibility in the difficult times of a crisis.

It illustrates the selfless behavior of the people around a single shaerd individual, and how empathy drives people to transcend their selfish interests. It also displays the behavior of an individual that is willing to protect other people without caring what happens to himself.

A picturesque town that protects a perilous secret.

The fiction revolves around a calm, quiet town in South Korea that enjoys a tranquil and uncomplicated lifestyle. The town, like other towns, is economically active because of a nuclear power plant. The townspeople and their families receive employment, and the area is supplied with electricity. However, the facility has recently been over which quiet concerns in the towns.

The focus of the story, Jae-hyeok, works in a plant as one of the many workers on the production floor. He informs his mother, sister in-law and his nephew about his work. Jae-hyeok, unlike the other plant workers, tends to fantasize about other jobs away from the plant, maybe starting a business of his own or going to the beach, but remains unswervingly attached to his hometown and the people closest to him.

Jae-hyeok has been in a relationship with a gentle and smart woman named Yeon Joo. She, as Jae-hyeok, works as a plant guide and compliments the story. This relationship gives the audience an extension of Jae-hyeok’s story, adding his values of commitment, passion and calm will to his distinct character.

An Unexpected Crisis

The moment an earthquake strikes the area, everything shifts. The first and primary stage of the nuclear plant being constructed and the surrounding area shudders as the nuclear plant inhales its maiden breath. Though the destruction appears to be in a control, a deeper inspection uncovers damaged cooling systems. The plant is now in a complicated situation as there is no cooling available to the system.

There appears to be an unfolding sequence of events with little to no movement. This is the stage where plant officials and higher ups of the Government come together to rationalize. It appears, from the outcome, there is now a question about evacuation. What hindered the town was the long periods of indecisiveness as well as lack of plan.

Citizens within the town soon start to fear for their well-being. Conflicting information provided by officials causes disarray. Whispers start to circulate, and the bonds of trust start to fade away. The film treats these moments delicately, portraying the mental impact of ambiguity on both the families and employees.

The Circumstances Call for Heroic Measures.

As the situation escalates, it becomes evident that decisive intervention is necessary to avert something far worse. The only option is for someone to descend to the plant’s ‘red zone’ – an area deemed the most perilous on the whole facility – to undertake repairs and physically stabilize the systems.

Fully aware of what this entails, Jae-hyeok offers himself. Together with a band of workers, he volunteers to reenter the ‘hot zone’ of the facility. Although he is utterly spent and emotionally worn, he is motivated not by impulse or fame, but by a sense of obligation toward his family, peers, and society.

This part of the film is incredibly powerful, demonstrating that the most courageous acts stem from unassuming decisions to choose others over oneself.

__Performances and Costume Design

The actors and actresses share their numerous authentic and unforgettable roles with the audience. Kim Nam-gil, who acts as Jae-hyeok, shows internal and external warmth, humility, and subtle power. His representation is very much more realistic and allows the audience to empathize with his hurdles and decisions.

The character of the protagonist and the hero, Park Jung-woo, is spry and constructed with ease. Instead of relying on the actors and the show, he concentrates more on the ride of the characters. The intensity of emotion is covered and thought provoking, and monotonous to the core.

The film is built in a way that touches the audience considerably. This tenderness is further baffled by the clash of character emotions evoked in the audience and the contrast with the hero character’s heroism.
