Being the New Director in this Franchise.
The Naked Mile is the third installment in the American Pie Presents series. With respect to the original american pie trilogy, it is a stand alone story with a few connections. It tells the story of Erik Stifler, who happens to be related to the infamous Stifler from the original trilogy and is one of the most eccentric characters the series huizen.
Contrary to his cousin, Erik is seen to be more considerate, gentle, and calm. In the film, Erik’s evolution focuses on how he copes with the discrepancy between his identity and how others perceive him due to his family name. People expect him to be wild since he is a “Stifler,” but Erik’s personality is a wild card.
Plot Summary
This is the story of Erik Stifler, a high school senior who is in a more serious relationship and is relatively more mature than most of his peers. Erik is often compared to his cousin, Dwight Stifler, a college student who is very loud and carefree.
One day, Erik’s girlfriend suggests taking a break in their relationship, so Erik can have what she thinks is a “free experience” before he heads into college. Erik, with the help of his best friends, decides to visit his cousin, Dwight, and partake in the famous college tradition called “The Naked Mile,” where college students run naked through the campus.
When Erik and his friends get to university, they begin to experience an environment that differs from the one they had in high school. The parties are more boisterous, the individuals more audacious, and the demands more extraordinary. Erik feels the need to reconcile the experience with his inner integrity.
Throughout the trip, Erik must choose between conformity and the personal set of values he assigns to his identity. His cousin, Dwight, tries to get him to “loosen up,” but Erik discovers that he does not have to identity in ways his family — or anyone else — expects.
Friends in this time and place learn more about camaraderie, healthy boundaries, and the growing up that the story depicts abstractly. There are many silly examples, and friends remain to learn about maturity and respect, in an apparent juxtaposition to the more serious problems to be solved.
The movie ends with Erik learning that one does not have to earn anyone’s attention to gain personal worth. He positively reconnects with his girlfriend and learns that self awareness and truthfulness are more compelling factors in relationships than driven peer pressure. His friends have also developed a more mature understanding of the world.
Characters
Erik Stifler
As the main character, he is kind, considerate, and, most importantly, self-reflective in regard to his role within the social landscape of his environment. Unlike the rest of his social circle, he does not attempt to uphold the Stifler family expectations. Furthermore, Erik sheds the family stereotype, unlike his relatives, and begins his journey of self-acceptance.
Dwight Stifler
As Erik’s cousin, Dwight is immensely popular in college and is very expressive, and loud, and constantly trying to motivate Erik to expose himself to situations out of his comfort zone. Although he emphasizes the negative aspects of college life, his role is to encourage Erik on his journey of self-actualization and to allow Erik to carve his own identity.
Erik’s Friends—Ryan and Cooze
Erik’s college buddies, Ryan and Cooze, undergo their own challenges, which helps them internalize the values of friendship and the intertwining themes of autonomy and accountability. While they serve as comic relief, they also add heavier emotional content and substance to the narrative.
Tracy
Erik’s girlfriend, Tracy, helps in demonstrating how confrontations in young relationships can mature. Their reconciliation contains elements of trust, mutual respect, and empathy, demonstrating how young relationships can evolve.
While The Naked Mile is considered a comedy, there are several important life themes within the storyline.
- Identity and Individuality
As far as Erik’s personal issues are concerned, the most important lesson he learns is that he does not have to comply with the behaviors of others to gain acceptance. This is especially true for those individuals feeling the pressure of conformism: those whose name or background sets them as a target, or those within a particular social network.
- Friendship
The devotion Erik’s friends display may be a bit askew, but is well-meaning. This is a testament to the bond of friendship, where individuals accompany one another, even if the circumstance is not the most pleasant.
- Peer Pressure and Self-Control
The film illustrates the phenomenon of peer pressure particularly within the youth demographic. Erik, and the friends he is associated with in the film, are placed in social situations in which the pressure to conform is intense. Yet, the film posits that genuine self-worth arises from the ability to contravene one’s principles.
- Growth and Transition
The film is set during an important phase of transition in the lives of its characters: the finality of high school and the onset of college. This life stage triggers the issues of independence and the associated intricacies of emotional maturity. The experiences of the characters respond to many of the overriding issues young people confront.
Tone and Style
Light-hearted and exaggerated comedy is the mainstay of the American Pie Presents series and The Naked Mile is no exception. The Naked Mile features comedy that is exaggerated yet attempts to capture and tell a deeper story of a young adult coming to the realization of the various components of their personality and the choices that define the individual. The film attempts a combination of slapstick comedy with a story of genuine realization that is primarily aimed at the younger crowd undergoing relative life changes of their own.
The expected and familiar college, parties, and loud and exaggerated characters, and silly teen soap opera storylines, are the expected backdrop. Yet the story remains rooted with Erik’s intelligent and inner driven story.
Audience and Reception
Although the film is primarily targeted at older teens and young adults, the underlying messages communicated make it a story that a larger set of viewers can connect with. Those that are willing to rise above the overpowering humor will be able to appreciate a well crafted story of coming of age.
The Naked Mile is a film that is specific with the comedy embraced, where most critics appreciate the heart of the film, others progress to the over exaggerated components of the film. The general audience that enjoyed the old American Pie series found The Naked Mile to be pleasurable. The Naked Mile is pleasurable to the majority as it contains a well balanced mix of humor and emotional content and the audience as a whole found it to be entertaining.
American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile is not just another college comedy. It is a tale of self-respect, friendship, and taking the road you believe is the right one, even if the people around you want something different. Stifler Erik’s journey is proof that growing up is not simply a matter of getting in line and going with the crowd, but of finding yourself.
In conclusion, the film illustrates that while most people can remember you for what you did, your character is the one abiding trait that will be remembered. The most essential act of all is, most of the time, to simply take a single step in the forward direction.
