The Privilege

Synopsis

The Privilege (German title: Das Privileg) is a supernatural mystery-thriller film released in 2022 on Netflix. Felix Fuchssteiner and Katharina Schöde directed and produced the film, which blends suspense, psychological, and sci-fi. The contemporary German film narrates the story of a teenager who begins to uncover the bizarre mysteries around him and the hidden truths, the secrets and the order of reality.

The story focuses on Finn Bergmann, a quiet teenage boy who studies at a prestigious private school. Finn is haunted by the traumatic memories of his sister Anna, who, years before, died under strange circumstances. Anna’s death was an accident, or so the people around Finn say, but the boy has always felt an injustice around the death, sensing something strange under the surface.

As a teenager, he begins to have a series of haunting memories and strange phenomena, and then nightmares. At first, he attributes the phenomena and nightmares to his past trauma. But the psychological explanation begins to collapse, for the phenomena and nightmares are so extreme, and he knows they are true.

Finn grows increasingly concerned when he notices the behavioral effects the prescribed medication is having on him and other students. Together with his friends Lena and Samira, Finn begins researching the medication and its potential ties to a larger, more opaque organization. This inquiry leads them to a terrain of hidden truths at the intersection of science and the mystical.

This trio, while investigating, stumbles upon a concealed cabal carrying out purportedly scientific “research” and possibly occult “rituals” within a framework of bleak and predatory exploitation. Strange occurrences, the wealth of Finn’s family and his school, and Finn’s social and academic privilege all seem to overlap more than coincidentally.

New truths emerging from his investigation seem to defy Finn’s sense of reason and reality. The film The Privilege strives to depict this beautifully as a disintegration of the protagonist’s mind, walking the viewer along the limitless horizon separating contradiction pairs: reality and delusion, faith and reason, and the ultimate paradox: truth and falsehood.

Most of all, The Privilege is about a young man who—unlike a world around him filled with disinformation—tells him to keep searching. perplexing contradictions, disinformation, and anti-instincts. This tale embodies the classic virtues of friendship and the moral courage to seek truth—no matter how uncomfortable.

The Privilege brings together a combination of young, new, and seasoned German actors, creating an intense atmosphere and imbuing the film with emotional weight.

Also contributing mystery and emotional stakes to the story are the supporting roles of Roman Knizka and Janina Agnes Schröder.

Direction and Cinematography

The film is directed by Felix Fuchssteiner and Katharina Schöde. It integrates realistic drama with supernatural suspense. The directors keep a steady hand to ensure the film maintains an emotional realism rather than edging on emotional sensationalism during the film’s unnerving moments.

The film’s enigmatic and moody quality is a result of the work of cinematographer Jakub Bejnarowicz. Finn’s unstable reality is portrayed using cool colors and dim lighting, and dreamlike images. Various scenes amplify the film’s psychological narrative by blurring the boundaries of memory and imagination and with real occurrences.

Themes and Interpretation

Despite The Privilege being a thriller, it is built on a larger thematic foundation. The most notable of these is:

  1. Trust and Perception

Finn’s inner journey is the core of the story. It is an emotional thread with the centre being the film’s exploration of one’s ability to trust/frustration with others when faced with uncertainty.

  1. The Power of Friendship

The central focus of the film is the bond shared by Finn, Lena, and Samira. For the story’s emotional foundation, their unwavering loyalty in the face of escalating danger and disarray is a bastion of hope and emotional stability.

  1. Science vs. Spirituality

The film’s understated approach in examining the tensions that arise during scientific advancement and the morals pertaining to its use is commendable. The underlying use of medicine and technology to control versus to heal serves as the motif of the film.

  1. Coping with Loss

The emotional weight resting on Finn due to the death of his sister is handled with care. The film shows how loss affects one’s perception and identity, and damages trust, and how the only way to move on is to confront the past.

IMDb Ratings and Reception

The Privilege is rated in IMDb at about 4.6/10, which indicates and suggests indifference, yet with the mounting opinions on the net, one could only assume that the discrepancy is due to calibration error. Many users praise the film for its visuals and effects, as well as for the atmosphere built around the suspense. The performances of the young cast, in particular that of Max Schimmelpfennig in the role of a troubled and curious teenager, were highlighted. The combination of genres and the attempt to merge elements of science fiction with a psychological thriller were seen as ambitious and creatively organized.

There were, however, users as well as critics that commented on the film and how it did not answer enough questions or that it could have developed its themes and ideas further. Some critics, and, to a lesser extent, users, compared the film to a thriller and suggested it contain more character sociology and streamlined the rationale of the film. This is hopefully the last time this film is mentioned and described without its due credit.

Final Thoughts

The Privilege is a film that seeks to navigate the unchartered. With a young cast, intriguing premises, and atmospheric direction, it provides a visually stimulating and cerebral experience. The story encourages the audience to consider the nature of reality, the boundaries of science, and the role of intuition.

The Privilege fundamentally illustrates the experience of maturing where the world is perplexing, and the bravery to persist in dissensus. It conveys that the quest in resolving a discord is human, and is deeply tangled and emotional.
