Synopsis
Directed by John Krasinski, “A Quiet Place Part II” is a suspenseful science fiction drama where the story picks up directly after the first film, A Quiet Place (2018). The narrative continues to examine the aspects of human connection, resilience, and the will to survive, not only as individuals but as families, and the extraordinary lengths people go to hold on to one another in a changed, hostile world.
In the near future, most of the population lives in constant fear of violent, inhuman creatures, whose attacks are triggered by the faintest sounds. The story centers on the Abbott family, who, in the post-tragedy first film setting, are left to the dangers of the world. Surviving members of the family, widow Evelyn Abbott, her children Regan, Marcus and her infant baby must fend for themselves in an abandoned wasteland.
Krasinski and the production team provide a brilliant introduction to the film with a flashback to the first day the world changed. The peace of a sleepy, small town on a quiet day, is the calm before the storm, the disaster of which the inhabitants have not yet begun to comprehend and the film audience is within only seconds of the normal world.
Forced to leave their family farm and in search of safety, the Abbotts now find themselves with limited resources and no home. They leave with supplies and with an important new discovery: Regan’s hearing device can emit a frequency that disrupts the creatures. This gives the family a means of limited self-defense.
Emmett, an old family friend, has been surviving alone and somewhat self-isolating after a deep personal tragedy and loss. Regan’s courage and determination helped Emmett accept the family’s help, and Emmett joined the deception because Regan and the family brought hope, in a world of despair, to someone as hesitant and reserved as him.
Believing there is a place that is a safe haven, with the people there living without fear, Regan leaves to find it, alone. Emmett, realizing the importance of Regan, helped the story move to unseen territory as she stepped to the world that was waiting for her knowledge, and he was willing to risk everything. Evelyn stayed to tend to Marcus and the baby as Emmett.
The film masterfully develops the distinct paths of three stories: the journey of Regan and Emmett to find a possible sanctuary, the efforts of Evelyn to protect her family, and the experiences of Marcus as he encounters and overcomes obstacles that compel him to quickly mature. Each of these narratives is rife with dramatic suspense and emotion and revolves the central themes of survival and the willpower required to endure and persevere during times of uncertainty.
As the narrative approaches its climax, Regan displays her leadership abilities. The narrative arc of the previous film is far more pronounced in her characterization. The ending of the film balances themes of optimism, hope, and resilience.
Cast & Crew
Emily Blunt as Evelyn Abbott
Blunt, as the film’s heroine and the determined mother, delivers the most moving performances of her career. The film revolves around the axis of Evelyn and her quiet but central strength of calmly and unflinchingly managing her children and family while under the threat of constant danger.
Millicent Simmonds as Regan Abbott:
Simmonds was my favorite actor in the cast. She personifies all the positive attributes of Regan. As a little girl who is deaf, Regan displays great virtue. Simmonds is deaf, so her contribution to the role is even greater.
Noah Jupe as Marcus Abbott:
Marcus shows the greatest growth in the film and Jupe shows the great emotion of fear and confusion, and showing great bravery in a boy who has to grow up and face the harsh realities of the world in a very short time.
Cillian Murphy as Emmett:
Murphy is new to the cast, and as Emmett, he plays a man who is trying to deal with a character of loss and alienation. Over time, and quite unexpectedly, he becomes a guide and protector of Regan. Cillian adds depth and humanity to the role.
John Krasinski as Lee Abbott:
Krasinski features very briefly as Lee in the opening sequence, and he reminds us of the family’s past and the sacrifice during the first film.
Directed and Written by:
John Krasinski
Krasinski again takes on the role of director and writer, to the delight of many. He has a knack for character-driven, suspenseful storytelling. His focus on silent storytelling is something a lot of great film directors have attempted. It is a great technique, and the focus on family closeness is commendable.
