Ask Me What You Want

Synopsis

“Ask Me What You Want” is a Spanish comedy film directed by Santi Amodeo and released in Spain in 2013 under the title “Quien Mato A Bambi?”. This film is known for its witty and swift narratives, eccentric humor along the lines of crime and coincidence. This film should not be confused with the German film “Erzähl mir was du willst” which has a different premise. This article is concerned with ¿Quién mató a Bambi? (Ask Me What You Want) which is a slice of life comedy featuring a plethora of misunderstandings and friendships along with a few comical events.

The movie follows the two friends David and Sebas and the strange predicament they find themselves in that tends to get worse and worse with every choice made. David works for a company owned by his girlfriend’s father, a respected, and very rich businessman, Mr. Emilio. Things start going terribly when David learns that the company is missing, and worse, his future father in law is missing as well.

Across town, meanwhile, Sebas, who has been friend with David for years, has his own set of challenges. He cannot get a loan to cater for his family. Out of his wits and with little choice, he contemplates a morally dubious scheme to resolve his monetary problems, if only to bring about some change, not knowing that some unresolved caprice was already waiting to land on him.

The odd inturn of events that shocks everyone and perplexes the two is that, out of the blue, in the midst of all the confounding mishaps, they mistakenly and accidentally truss Mr. Emilio into the trunk of a car. With confusion and panic gripping them, they are at a loss for how to get out of this predicament and then the story takes a quite humorous and ridiculous turn during which the two, in trying to undo what they can, get into even bigger trouble all of which they do with the resolve not to involve the authorities, the relatives, or a company that, at this documentary swimming, is yet to be named.

The more the story unfolds, the more such characters and even more ridiculousness and pandemonium are woven into the tapestry of the tale, which, upon close consideration, revolves around more sophisticated motives, such as business companions, loan sharks, cops, and bizarre citizens. With every effort the characters deploy to get to the core of the issue, they only succeed in amplifying the issues at hand. The humor is not merely slapstick or some low-level crude, but wittily comedic, soaked in the most ingenious writing, ridiculous yet clever and situationally paradoxical with a cast of characters, all aiming for the best but only ending to do the worst.

Ultimately, the movie resolves its open ending in a fitting and full circle manner. The characters suffer the consequences of their actions, yet the experience is one with comedic, heartfelt friendship, and the constant reminder that nothing ever goes according to plan.

Final Thoughts

Unlike other films, Ask Me What You Want does not shut its doors to the unbelievable. It does not distinguish between good and bad. Rather it speaks of the mundane; people and their interactions with unusual circumstances. In the dimensions of the intermingling, values of friendship are shown – response to anxiety, save the day with ideas, and how the plans can go terribly, terribly wrong.

In the other hand unlike other comedies. This film is not based on absurd setups or broken regurgitated dry stereotypes. Rather it humor is based on a level of insanity that one can pursue and achieve in reality. It is based on the very fabric of existence of misconception, misinterpretations, sheer brainless actions, and the humorous threshold of the actions that are brought to reality.

While there may not be a deep moral or emotional burden with it, it does make for an amusing ride through human blunders and nonsensical choices. For an audience seeking a carefree, comical film thrill, and the unfolding of an unexpected storyline, Ask Me What You Want would be a good choice.

The film’s magic lies within the simplicity of the concept. The audience gets ample enjoyment for the time invested as the film is able to deliver on its promise. The film is accompanied by a witty, well-timed narrative and a humorously li and character driven storyline that reminds us how the biggest problems are often the consequences of the tiniest blunders.
