For the first time, he is able to transition with ease and mobility without the burden of cumbersome surgical apparatus.

The Player and the Role
The role of Eli more than meets the requirements of the part. As it is played by Charlie Shotwell, the performance beautifully captures the essence of a boy feeling intense and uncontrolled loneliness all while battling internal fears and self identity questions. A blend of naivety and primal grit, Charlie Shotwell captures the role deep down as it is an inspiring piece.
Dr. Isabella Horn is played by Lili Taylor, a mysterious presence and the head of the facility. During the movie, more of her evil side and ill intentions are exposed. Surprisingly, she is very calm and collected as she dives into her role.
On the other hand, Eli’s mother Rose, played by Kelly Reilly, is more delicate and shallow as she is driven more by fear and desperation; she is loving and protective and ironically, vulnerable to great mental destruction.
Max Martini showcased his talent by playing Paul, Eli’s father. Much of the story is driven by the hope and realism he provides as he supports the treatment and tries to keep his head above the swirling waters of disbelief.
Haley, played by Sadie Sink, is a spunky girl who, while becoming close friends to Eli, also solves the central mystery of the movie.

Jeff Cutter, the cinematographer, employs muted palettes devoid of strong colors and kept the lighting natural, an artistic choice that simultaneously generates discomfort and anchors the narrative in the real world. A significant aspect of the camera work has the audience experience scenes from Eli’s point of view, amplifying his befuddlement and intrigue.
Much of the sound design is imperceptible, but accomplished, consisting of whispers, creaks, and echoes to manifest tension.
