Introduction
Foe is a sci-fi drama film released in 2023 and directed by Garth Davis who co-wrote it with Iain Reid. It is based on Reid’s novel with the same title. The movie features a distant yet familiar future and blends domestic tensions with broad philosophical questions. The movie also features Saoirse Ronan, Paul Mescal, and Aaron Pierre, with a focus on a story about a couple whose peaceful rural life is disrupted by a stranger who brings unprecedented news.
Foe chooses not to use thrilling action scenes or special effects. Instead, the movie emphasizes the emotional and psychological distances between people, regardless of how close they are to one another. At its core, the film feels like one about absence, connection, identity, and the nature of closeness between people.

Deep in the countryside, Hen and Junior have remained on the farm Junior’s family has owned for generations. Their new lives, which starkly contrast their old, reflect changes in the environment and growing efforts by humanity to adapt, even venturing to space.
One days, government agent Terrance drops by for a visit and has some interesting news to share: Junior has been selected to participate in a new and exciting program to leave earth and live on a space station. Terrance mentions the organization will give Hen a “companion” for the duration of the two years, a highly advanced replica of Junior who will talk, act, and look just like him.
The main objective is to offer comfort and stability. To the rest of the couple, it is discomfort and waves of unwanted questions. How does one approach replacing a person with a copy of a person? Does the copy of a person who is an emotional being stand a chance of being replicated? How is one supposed to bid farewell to a person, when it is expected that a version of them will remain?
The tension in the house increases when Terrance starts visiting Junior on a regular basis to collect information about Junior for the replica. This forces Hen to ponder about her life, marriage and her personal ambitions. Along with the rest of the couple, Hen and Junior started to see the growing emotional discord in their marriage, and with it, their mutual feelings of unfulfilled aspiration.
The more the story is examined, the more a supposed sci-fi conundrum shifts to a personal reflection, a sort of deep dive into a relationship in its starkest form. Hen and Junior are not simply preparing for some event in the future. Rather, the couple is more focused on the realities that remain unsaid. Such feelings are awakened when Terrance is around and when the couple is promised a duplicate of the husband. This makes it easier to answer the questions of self, love and identity that lie at the center of their existence.
Topics
- The Gap of Presence versus Absence
A couple in the story lives ‘together’ whilst being apart. Relationships get quiet as intimacy fades almost to the point of absence. The film expands on the idea of ‘replacement’ with the phenomenon of people being a part of each other’s lives while not being known or seen.
- The Question of Identity and Being ‘Replaceable’
The film asks the important question, what or how does a person come to be themselves? Is it the nexus of memories, actions, a body or something more profound? The film in some way posits the thought of a person being an augmented replica of themselves, and how identity is more than physical self, but emotional history, connection, and change.
- Physical and Emotional Isolation
The couple’s house is situated far away from other houses. This adds emotional isolation on top of physical isolation. The empty landscape and quiet surroundings mirror the character’s inner lives. The farm itself is a character as well. It is a character of the story that symbolizes tradition, emotional stagnation, cycle, and repetition.
- A Yearning and A Dream Untold
For Hen, it isn’t solely the prospect of Junior’s leaving that concerns her. The conversations with Terrance and the introspection during the movie point to someone who at one time supremely fantasized about life beyond a solitary farm. Her expedition is the one of reinvention — recalling the ‘her’ that existed prior to ease turning into a constraint.
- The Unclear Tomorrow
The movie is set within a time frame where interplanetary travel and profound changes to the environment are commonplace. However, the movie does not dwell on the advancements in technology. Instead, it uses the setting to pose questions that concern the future of the human race — not in the scientific sense, but on a personal scale. It inquires: what are the possible alternatives when change is bound to happen? And what is the correct approach to it that is truthful?
Visual and Emotional Style
The cinematography of the movie is described as being overwhelmingly quiet and restrained. The use of prolonged takes, low light, and wide angle shots focusing on the land invites contemplation. The color scheme is muted and earthy, creating a sense of calm, but at times, the mellowed tones generate an unsettled feeling.”
The absence of music allows for the silences to be emphasized. The dialogue is often described as soft spoken and sluggish, yet it is filled with tension. Characters’ internalized struggles are not expressed through actions, but described through stillness, eye contact, and words unspoken.
Performances
Saoirse Ronan’s portrayal of Hen is filled with inner strength which allows Ronan to display her hidden emotions and feelings in a more softer and calmer manner. Junior, played by Paul Mescal, is a man who is both extremely traditional but confused in the time of change. Aaron Pierre plays the character of Terrance, who appears to be unprofessional but a lot more reflective than he shows. He is a character who is filled with inner calmness and profoundness.
The three of them together is neither fast nor slow, but a triangle of emotional depth in which every interaction propels the story forward with great intensity.
Conclusion
Foe is unlike any science fiction film. It embraces the concept which is futuristic to tackle unanswered and timeless human emotions and questions such as love, memories, distance, and the meaning of true companionship. The film does not give the audience a story which is filled with action. Instead, it gives a space to think and reflect upon the silence, which is deeper than the words spoken.
Fundamentally, Foe asks: when a person you love isn’t all there, what do you do? How do you go about restoring that relationship? What do we shed from ourselves, when we have no other choice, and we have to evolve?
